We are searching for a motivated Research Scientist specializing in human immunology to lead research focused on elucidating the intricate relationship between inhalation exposures and immunological diseases. The role involves driving studies to comprehend the impact of inhalation exposures on the immune system, particularly within the context of potential pandemic threats and changing environmental conditions. Your responsibilities will encompass the development of preventive strategies against aerosolized pathogens and environmental factors like wildfire smoke, requiring a deep mechanistic understanding of immune responses in the lungs and the body as a whole. You will independently conduct host-response research to establish a robust framework for characterizing various inhalation exposures and assessing biologic countermeasures, thus contributing to our knowledge of inhalation-related risks and their mitigation. This position is in the Translational Immunology group within the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

In this role you will:

  • Conduct fundamental independent research in biological inhalation exposure (pathogen/environment) and its impact on immunology and disease, with a focus on human relevant models.
  • Conceive, develop, and implement independent approaches related to aerosolized pathogens and the immune effects based on immunological and biochemical characterization of cells, transcripts, proteins, and metabolites.
  • Enable the discovery, validation, and mechanistic understanding of signaling pathways that can be further translated into new treatments for a variety of diseases.
  • Interact with a large interdisciplinary team of scientists, project and program leaders, and commercial partners.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meeting.
  • Interact with contract research organizations to explore and/or execute commercial complementation toward program goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • PhD in Immunology or infectious diseases or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Significant experience in Aerosol biology, lung immunology and applications in animal and human related models.
  • Advanced knowledge on detailed characterization of the host cellular the immune system using modern techniques in cellular and systems biology.
  • Ability to work independently on (and lead) research projects that may not be well defined as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to deliver presentations, prepare written reports, explain technical information, and provide advice to management as needed.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications we desire:

  • Experience designing and implementing in vitro and in vivo inhalation exposure experiments.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and analyzing multi-color flow cytometry and cell sorting experiments.
  • Experience designing and performing assays to assess immune function in animal and cellular models.
  • Experience designing and performing in vitro cell-based assays to characterize humoral and cell mediated immune responses elicited by vaccine formulations.
  • Experience with laboratory information management software.
