A scientist/engineer position is available in the Nanoscale Characterization Facility (NCF; www.nano.indiana.edu) at Indiana University Bloomington. The NCF is a core research facility for use by students, staff, and faculty and houses instrumentation for micro- and nanoscale fabrication and characterization of materials with nanoscale dimensions. The NCF resides on the ground floor in Simon Hall and has 2000 ft2 of laboratory space and 1300 ft2 of clean room space.
Current instrumentation includes a focused ion beam instrument (Zeiss Auriga 60), scanning electron microscope (FEI Quanta 600) with a nanopattern generation system (Nabity NPGS), atomic force microscope (Asylum Research MFP-3D), nanoimprint lithography instrument (Nanonex NX2500), and scanning x-ray photoelectron microscope (PHI VersaProbe II) along with a number of other instruments. Over the next two years, these capabilities will expand to include dedicated e-beam lithography, reactive-ion etching, atomic layer deposition, plasma-enhance chemical vapor deposition, and e-beam evaporation.
This available position is for a scientist or engineer with experience and interest in micro- and nanoscale fabrication and characterization, which will primarily make use of the instruments within the facility. This position is user-oriented; consequently, the primary duties are related to interacting with users, developing new experiments, supporting experiments, and problem solving in support of user research.
Primary Responsibilities:
1) Oversee daily operations of the NCF
2) Operate and maintain the instruments within the NCF
3) Train users on these instruments and assist with experiments and data analysis
4) Develop methods and collect preliminary data
5) Work with users from research groups to advance their projects
6) Foster collaborative projects with research groups
Additional duties include:
1) Conduct billing of instrument time
2) Maintain the NCF website
3) Contribute to proposals to acquire new instruments for the NCF
4) Participate in outreach activities
5) Maintain, store, and backup data
Desired Attributes and Skills:
1) Demonstrated creative problem solving and research skills in the development and application of state-of-the-art fabrication and characterization techniques
2) Experience working on multiple research projects, including relevant time management and prioritization skills
3) Aptitude for building positive user/collaborator relationships, and enthusiasm for building and maintaining a professional network
4) Experience and fulfillment in helping others to become successful
5) Strong dedication to quality, safety, collaboration, and teamwork
Applicants should be good team players, and enjoy an open, collaborative and mutually respectful team environment. We are especially looking for applicants who are motivated to learn new technologies, take on new challenges, and develop new methods and techniques.
Minimum Qualifications:
1) Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, Materials Science, or other related discipline, or the equivalent combination of science and/or engineering experience and education (B.S., B.E., M.S., or M.E.)
2) At least three years of research or job-related experience in micro- and nanofabrication and characterization, with preferred experience in e-beam lithography, focused ion beam milling, etch and deposition techniques, and/or nanoimprint lithography.
Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, a brief description of past research experience in micro- and nanofabrication (~2 pages), and contact information for three references. All application materials should be submitted through IU’s job portal here: https://indiana.peopleadmin.com/postings/17304
The start date for this position is approximately 08/01/2023. For full consideration, apply by 05/31/2023. Compensation will be competitive and based on experience. For additional information, please contact NCF director, Stephen Jacobson (jacobson@indiana.edu).
