Post-doctoral Research Position Studying Vortex Dynamics in Electron Plasmas
The University of California San Diego positron group has an opportunity for a post-doctoral researcher to work on a DOE-sponsored project to study vortex dynamics using trapped electron plasmas. Coherent vortex structures are ubiquitous in fluids and plasmas and are an important example of self-organization in nonlinear dynamical systems. A great advantage of trapped electron plasmas is that the electron density, which is the analog of vorticity, can be measured directly; and E x B flow fields can be imposed by voltages on the confining electrodes. Phenomena of interest include vortex dynamics in shear and strain flows, vortex damping, splitting and destruction, and driven vortex turbulence. The position provides the opportunity to do both experiments and complementary computer simulat
