Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Nuclear Materials Science (MST-16) group at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a qualified and highly motivated person for the position of Research Technologist with a strong background in X-ray diffraction (XRD). This position requires leadership and coordination with staff members to provide maintenance and operational support for X-ray diffractometers used in the characterization of plutonium alloys and compounds. You will develop, integrate, operate and maintain state-of-the-art X-ray scattering instruments, as well as lead or contribute to the development of X-ray scattering characterization techniques that enable advanced actinide materials research.

Responsibilities include:

• Independently operate and maintain X-ray diffraction instruments and supporting systems
• Troubleshoot and coordinate updates and repairs with vendors and support personnel
• Integrate with scientists to develop/maintain the X-ray diffraction systems and execute experiments
• Work with radiological and other programmatically relevant materials in glovebox environments
• Prepare and ship actinide materials, addressing technique development for preparing difficult sample environments in gloveboxes and open-front hoods
• Contribute to data analysis, interpretation and formal technical reporting
• Initiate and lead method development and improvement efforts of X-ray scattering systems
• Proactively assess instrument performance and reliability, generate improvement ideas and propose integration of new equipment or capabilities

Qualifications:

• A bachelor’s degree in science or engineering and 2-5 years of related experience; an advanced degree preferred
• Experience in X-ray diffraction, X-ray powder/polycrystalline materials characterization and sample preparation for X-ray scattering measurements
• Experience with data analysis software tools and standard office software
• Ability to obtain DOE Q clearance (usually requires U.S. citizenship) and HRP certification

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience with different X-ray scattering techniques such as GIXRD, SAXS, material stress/texture and pair distribution function (PDF) analysis
• Experience leading/managing daily laboratory operations
• Experience modifying, customizing and developing X-ray scattering systems, including auxiliaries (vacuum systems, non-ambient temperature systems)
• Experience providing direction, guidance, training and mentorship to other laboratory users
• Experience developing and conducting experiments with actinides
• Experience working in gloveboxes
