We have multiple openings for Research / Staff Scientists to perform research and development in support of Laboratory missions. You will support and/or lead R&D activities in areas of plasma coatings and thin-film fabrication, materials processing, and characterization for the fabrication of complex articles called targets in support of experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at LLNL and other national security programs. In this position, you will interact heavily with technical co-workers, supervisors, and customers, both internal and external to the Laboratory. This position is in the NIF Optics & Target Materials group of the Materials Science Division

These positions will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

In this role you will

• Conduct moderately complex to complex experiments to deposit thin films and coatings by various physical vapor deposition (PVD) and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) techniques.
• Metrologize films and coatings using a broad range of standard and advanced materials characterization and metrology tools.
• Operate and maintain high-vacuum coating and deposition systems.
• Develop appropriate documentation of findings and implemented solutions.
• Contribute to the development of new film deposition processes.
• Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.3 level

• Manage work activities in the Coatings laboratory that has over 10 deposition systems and 5-10 workers.
• Maintain production and R&D schedules and resolve scheduling conflicts by communicating and collaborating with the team of fabrication engineers and scientists.
• Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of research to address defined problems.
• Document research by writing internal reports, publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals, and presenting results within the DOE community and at conferences.
