The Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division has been designing, building and operating highly innovative ground, air and space-based measurement and detection systems for nearly 60 years. We solve some of the most challenging scientific and national security problems facing the world today. Our interdisciplinary teams of engineers, technicians, and scientists work, learn, and succeed through a highly creative and dynamic R&D environment. We lead experiments on NASA missions, including the Perseverance and Curiosity Rovers at Mars, Van Allen Probes, and Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) as well as the upcoming Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) Mission, Nano-satellite Atmospheric Chemistry Hyperspectral Observation System (NACHOS) mission, and The Beam Plasma Interactions Experiment (BEAMPIE) rocket experiment. We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced scientist or engineer to lead a space payload that measures x-rays and energetic charged particles as part of the United States Nuclear Detonation Detection System (USNDS). The XAPS (X-ray and Particle Sensing) project provides capabilities to produce actionable information for a broad range of National security stakeholders, and its execution spans all groups of ISR Division as well as other Divisions and external partners. The successful candidate will be responsible for research, development, production and deployment of XAPS science, technology and payloads of the highest possible quality and reliability within rigid cost, schedule and resource restraints. You will serve as Project Leader for one of the largest projects within the SNDD portfolio and lead workforce development related to capabilities needed by this project. You will identify and address program-wide issues as they arise and develop long-range program plan. You will ensure proper execution, delivery and quality of work, encourage new ideas and advanced concepts for improved payload performance and facilitate a vigorous research program and workforce development strategy. You will also develop, track, actively manage and report project-level risks to line and program management on a routine basis. Requirements: - Master’s or PhD in a STEM field from an accredited university and 12 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Expert-level knowledge and experience in space instrumentation, nuclear weapons or space electronics
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and lead a team
- Demonstrated success as a project leader, principal investigator or task leader on a complex experiment
- Excellent knowledge of project management standards, tools and techniques
- Expert-level knowledge and experience in development and implementing technical research and development projects
Desired Qualifications: - Proven record of accomplishment of developing junior personnel into domain experts
- Demonstrated experience managing risk landscapes spanning research projects
- Substantial experience implementing and using project management tools and techniques on a large, complex project
- Knowledge of lean management, six sigma, addictive manufacturing, resource load scheduling and basis of estimate
- Active Q Clearance (usually requires U.S. citizenship)
