Project Director, Cosmic Microwave Background Stage 4 (CMB-S4) Project - 91345 Organization: AP-Physical Sciences The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) is seeking an experienced scientific leader with an international reputation, significant management experience and an outstanding record of accomplishment to serve as the Project Director for the Cosmic Microwave Background Stage 4 (CMB-S4) project. CMB-S4 is envisioned as a multi-agency, multi-site project that will deploy and operate 500,000 superconducting detectors on multiple millimeter wave telescopes to deliver transformative discoveries in fundamental physics, cosmology, astrophysics, and astronomy. With a total project cost estimate of more than $600M, execution of the CMB-S4 project will involve contributions from multiple national labs and universities. Reporting to the Associate Laboratory Director for Physical Sciences at Berkeley Lab, the CMB-S4 Project Director is responsible and accountable for the successful execution of the CMB-S4 project within the approved cost, schedule and technical scope. This includes selection of technical and project staff, oversight of system requirements and flow-down to technical designs, implementation of effective project management systems, cost controls and schedules, identification and mitigation of project risks, and coordination of internal and external peer reviews. The Project Director will be the primary point of contact for the CMB-S4 project with the federal agencies, and will be expected to maintain transparent and effective communication with line management, federal agency sponsors, the CMB-S4 collaboration, the scientific community, and other stakeholders. The Project Director will also ensure that all necessary and appropriate environment, health and safety (EHS) requirements are integrated into the project execution plan and that all project activities are conducted in a safe and environmentally sound manner.
