We have an opening for the Group Leader (GL) position for the Nuclear Security Physics (NSP) group. The mission of the NSP is to apply technology and expertise of nuclear threats and physics to solve national questions and problems in nuclear security. As GL, you will provide technical, operational, and administrative leadership for approximately 15 to 20 scientists, including students and postdoctoral researchers. You will serve as a subject matter expert and participate in the development of cutting-edge research. The GL needs to be recognized nationally for their expertise, evident from publication record, invited presentations, or service on national-level committees. You will report directly to the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences (NACS) Division Leader and be required to have programmatic funding to cover the majority of your time. This position is in the NACS Division within the Physical and Life Sciences (PLS) Directorate. This position will be filled at either the SEL.4 or SEL.5 level, depending on your qualifications. Additional job duties will be assigned at the higher level. In this role you will - Lead and provide technical guidance including scientific and programmatic direction, to a diverse group of scientists, postdocs, and students, most with backgrounds in nuclear and particle physics and nuclear engineering.
- Serve as primary point of contact for communications between group members, Division, Programs, and Directorate management. Influence strategic technical decisions made by senior management and external customers.
- Collaborate with NACS and programmatic management to ensure program staffing needs are met and group members are considered for available programmatic assignments.
- Provide strategic direction for research and technology development in nuclear security including projects supported by the NNSA Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Program, Department of Homeland Security, Defense Threat Reduction Agency, and LDRD-funded activities. Also champion the integration and implementation of new projects and additional sponsors.
- Recruit and retain staff at all levels in relevant research areas, with attention to NACS, PLS, and LLNL objectives for improving diversity and inclusion.
- Perform group-leader tasks including: performance management, generate listings for additional hires, interview and recommend candidates for hiring, resource balancing, coach and support group members administratively and technically regarding training and professional development, ensure mentoring of new employees. Responsible for budget and resource management to ensure projects are completed within budget.
- Conduct independent research, publish results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals. Serve on external scientific and/or technical committees, give presentations at national and international meetings, representing the Laboratory.
- Oversee the safe and effective use of NSP laboratories. Responsible for the general oversight and personal commitment to the goals of Integrated Safety Management, Integrated Safeguards and Security Management, compliance with all ES&H regulations, good business practices, diversity, and equal opportunity.
Additional job responsibilities, at the SEL.5 level - Maintain a close interface with internal and external program managers to ensure effective scientific support; interact with programmatic sponsors within the Laboratory and with external funding agencies
