Responsibilities:
Physics Instructor (75%)
60% Teaching: Develop, implement and review effective teaching/learning processes, incorporating appropriate methodology, technology and other tools; Remain current in discipline and update course content when appropriate to reflect current levels of student knowledge in the discipline; Develop a system for ongoing evaluation of both teaching and learning, including expectations of student competency and student learning outcomes; Work in partnership with immediate supervisor through a formal system of evaluation of instruction to identify strengths and weaknesses and identify professional development activities to improve student learning.
10% Service: Maintain appropriate schedule of office hours for student access and inquiry; Work in partnership with student success personnel on student advising and orientation. Participate in institutional service roles such as but not limited to, college committees, club sponsorship, advisory committees, student/faculty recruitment and mentoring of new and part-time faculty.
5% Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity: Demonstrate a record of ongoing research, scholarship or creative activity appropriate to your academic discipline. Mentor 2-3 undergraduate research projects per year. Participate in departmental based research projects as necessary.
Planetarium Manager (25%)
10% Serve as the front-line point of contact for Planetarium shows and outreach activities. Develop a plan for Planetarium marketing and advertising in line with the Department, College, and University goals.
8% Maintain planetarium and telescope equipment to functional standards. Attend star shows and other events.
5% Manage, train, and direct staff and volunteers to run shows and participate in events.
2% Assist Director of Planetarium and Telescope as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
Master’s Degree in Physics, Astronomy, Physics Education, or a related field at the time of employment.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must demonstrate potential for outstanding teaching, ability to manage and maintain the planetarium facilities and staff, and strong verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to work in a dark environment with limited visibility and work frequently with astronomical telescopes and instruments at night. Physical activity will involve sitting, standing, bending, climbing stairs and walking and 20/20 corrected eyesight and occasional lifting of moderate loads (50 lbs). Significant work with telephone, computers and other planetarium and astronomy related electronic and media devices is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to teach additional courses from wider background is preferred, but not essential. Prior experience managing or using planetarium equipment would be considered ideal.
