About Whitworth’s Engineering and Physics Department
The purpose of the Department of Engineering and Physics is to provide our students with an academically rigorous education in physics and engineering. This education takes place in a context of committed Christian faith, intellectual challenge, and holistic mentoring. Through a foundation in physics and engineering as well as professional communication and ethics, we prepare students for lives of meaningful work in which they will explore the laws of the natural world that God has made and will design solutions to meet the needs of humanity.
The department currently has six tenured or tenure-track faculty. We graduate 15-20 undergraduate students each year. The majority of our students earn a B.S. in Engineering, a B.S. in Physics, or an engineering degree through our dual degree (3-2) partnership program. The department has an excellent record of placing students into top graduate programs.
We invite applicants who are passionate about teaching science to a diverse group of undergraduates to join a department committed to excellence in teaching. The majority of the teaching done by the successful candidate will be introductory physics (both lecture and lab) for STEM majors. In addition, the department values candidates who are excited about and well-qualified to do one of the following:
prepare elementary education majors to be knowledgeable and enthusiastic teachers of physical science
introduce students interested in environmental science to geology
provide an introduction to astronomy that is appropriate for students majoring outside of STEM
A full-time load is 21 teaching load credits per year (3 credits for lecture courses and 1.5 credits for laboratory sections).
To succeed in this role candidates will need:
A minimum of a masters in physics, physics education, astrophysics, geophysics, or a related field.
A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning.
A commitment to the educational mission of Whitworth as a Christian liberal arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian church.
Potential for effective undergraduate teaching, possessing strong relational skills with students and colleagues.
Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral English
Demonstrated awareness and commitment to effectively establishing relationships and positive communications across multiple dimensions of diversity including, but not limited to, race, gender, physical limitations, class or religious identities and perspectives.
A commitment to providing an equitable, just, and inclusive learning environment for all students.
Must meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States by the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue to work legally for the proposed term of employment.
