The CFN is a DOE-funded national scientific user facility, offering users a supported research experience with top-caliber scientists and access to state-of-the-art instrumentation. The CFN mission is advancing nanoscience through frontier fundamental research and technique development and is the nexus of a broad collaboration network. Each year, CFN staff members support the research of more than 550 external facility users. The CFN is a collaborative research environment, bringing together scientists with diverse expertise in areas including nanofabrication, electron microscopy, surface science, X-ray nanoscience, and theory & simulation.
Three strategic nanoscience themes underlie the CFN scientific facilities: The CFN fosters research on complex self-assembly processes, for building new ways of constructing Self- Assembled Nanomaterials by Design. The CFN supports state-of-the-art techniques for designing Nano-Architectures to improve the performance of materials. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
As an Assistant/Associate Scientist in the CFN:
You will conduct self-directed research in the area of soft, biological, and hybrid nanomaterials using X-ray scattering methods
You will develop new X-ray scattering methods and approaches for addressing outstanding nanoscience problems in nanoscience
You will support users conducting X-ray scattering experiments at beamlines and assist in analyzing their results
You will collaborate with nanoscience colleagues within the CFN and the broader community
You will publish your research results in peer-reviewed scientific journals
You will be an active CFN community member by participating in scientific and operational activities.
The Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking candidates for a scientific position in the Soft Matter and Bionanomaterials group at the Assistant or Associate Scientist level, depending on the experience and accomplishments of the selected candidate. The CFN is a user-oriented research center whose scientific program is focused on the understanding and exploitation of energy-related materials and way to create them, including polymers, organic-inorganic hybrid and bioderived nanomaterials.
You will develop a leading independent research program in soft matter and/or bio nanomaterials, including advancing state-of the-art data analysis and characterization methods utilizing x-ray scattering beamlines at BNL’s National Synchrotron Light Source II. Your research program will be aligned with the CFN scientific thrusts and, especially, with the goals of the Soft and Bio Nanomaterials group. This position will also involve working closely with CFN users, helping them achieve their research goals.
Qualified candidates will have a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry or Materials Science or related field; postdoctoral research experience; expertise in synchrotron-based x-ray scattering methods (such as SAXS, WAXS, GISAXS, diffuse scattering, reflectivity) and related equipment, strong scattering data analysis skills, and the ability to develop his/her own data reduction and analysis methodologies, and accomplishments in the study of soft matter or biophysical phenomena using scattering methods. He/she will also have good communication and interpersonal skills, and an interest in working with external users of the CFN.
