The Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position to begin in Fall 2019. We seek qualified candidates with a PhD in physics or a related field, and postdoctoral experience in experimental neutrino physics or particle astrophysics to undertake and carry out a cutting-edge research program aligned with experimental efforts currently underway at UNC and at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL), a Department of Energy Office of Nuclear Physics Center of Excellence. Our group is currently playing major roles in searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76Ge as part of the MAJORANA and LEGEND collaborations, and we are searching for a candidate whose research program will help lead these efforts and will develop an active research program addressing fundamental problems in subatomic matter. At UNC and TUNL there are also efforts underway on the KATRIN neutrino mass experiment, studies of coherent neutrino scattering as part of the COHERENT collaboration, and searches for physics beyond the standard model including tests of fundamental symmetries and searches for dark matter with MAJORANA and ABRACADABRA. The successful candidate will have a substantial research effort associated with TUNL, a consortium that includes UNC, Duke University, North Carolina State University, and North Carolina Central University. TUNL provides substantial technical and scientific resources related to our activities. The Department and TUNL both have machine shops with advanced CAD/CAM abilities and extensive experience in high vacuum fabrication. UNC computing clusters total more than 10,000 cores with advanced visualization capabilities. PhD in physics, or related field.
Qualifications and Experience
Postdoctoral experience in experimental nuclear physics or particle astrophysics.
