Intern - Research and Applications of Mechanics of Structures (RAMS) Graduate R&D Summer

: The RAMS institute is seeking highly qualified graduate students pursuing relevant degrees in mechanical, civil, or aerospace engineering and research interests in Solid Mechanics, Shock Physics, Material Mechanics, Structural Dynamics or similar disciplines to support on\-going programs during the summer of 2019\. Students having completed at least one year of study in pursuit of a Master's or Ph\.D\. degrees are preferred, however, students in transition from undergraduate to graduate programs may also be considered, space permitting\. Successful candidates will be assigned a staff mentor and work as part of a team of undergraduate and graduate interns from across the United States\. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Conduct both independent and group work+ Mentor undergraduate interns+ Periodically present work to staff and management Required: You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements: + Earned bachelor's degree+ Currently attending and enrolled full time \(or scheduled to graduate in the spring\) in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program+ Minimum cumulative GPA of 3\.0/4\.0+ Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer+ U\.S\. citizenship Note: If you have not yet started your graduate program, please apply to an undergraduate intern position\. Desired: + GPA greater than 3\.7/4\.0+ Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy \(DOE\) L\-Level Security Clearance Department Description: Sponsored by Sandia's Engineering Sciences Center, the Research and Applications of Mechanics of Structures \(RAMS\) Institute provides students an opportunity to work with outstanding technical staff in providing engineering solutions to national security mission deliverables\. Institute participants will research, develop, and apply computational capabilities to define mechanical environments and simulate response of complex structural systems subjected to extreme loading conditions\. Students work in a collaborative environment and participate in frequent technical and team building activities throughout their internship, including career discussions, tours, and invited speakers\. Students are assigned to projects and mentors through a process that matches their interests to on\-going projects\. Depending on interests, some students may also participate in the Nonlinear Mechanics and Dynamics \(NOMAD\) Research Institute or the Nuclear Weapon \(NW\) SPRINT design competition in addition to their main project work\.
