Department of Computer Science Position for Cluster Hire in Artificial Intelligence
The Department of Computer Science at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) invites applications for one tenure-track or tenured open rank (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) position, starting in Fall 2019. This position is targeted towards faculty with expertise and interest in artificial intelligence (AI). Outstanding candidates from all areas of AI will be considered, and preference will be given to applicants with expertise in cyber adversarial learning, AI for resource-constrained systems (such as IoTs and embedded systems), or AI (such as natural language processing, computer vision and deep learning) as it relates to health-related applications. This position is part of a university-wide cluster hiring initiative in Artificial Intelligence. Applicants for an Assistant Professor position must earn a Ph.D. by September 1, 2019, in Computer Science or in a related field and must demonstrate a strong potential for excellence in research and teaching.
Applicants for an Associate/Full Professor position must have a Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field and extensive experience in graduate and undergraduate teaching. They should also have an established research program in their area of specialization.
Responsibilities include research (individual and collaborative), teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and program development. Salary and start-up supporting packages for the positions are highly competitive.
The Department of Computer Science currently has 23 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees supporting a dynamic and growing program with 1,200 undergraduates and 140 graduate students, including 62 Ph.D. students. Faculty in the Department of Computer Science conduct numerous research projects with funding from a variety of federal and state agencies. Research is conducted in areas such as cyber security, big data analytics, parallel and distributed computing, machine learning, computer vision, image processing, software engineering, human computer interaction, game development, operating systems, networks, databases, and bioinformatics, among others. The major research units in the department include: the Institute for Cyber Security, which operates FlexCloud and FlexFarm laboratories dedicated to cyber security research; and the Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security (CIAS), which focuses on cyber security maturity of cities and communities and also conducts nation-wide Cyber Security Defense Competitions for college and high school students. The research activities and experimental facilities have been well supported by several federal research and infrastructure grants. UTSA recently received a large 5-year NSF CREST grant on investigating cloud security and privacy. CIAS recently received a large 5-year grant from the Department of Homeland Security to set up a national standards organization for information sharing and analysis. The Department also recently received a large 5-year grant from the Army Research Laboratory to investigate the modeling and prediction of cyber-attacks as well as several grants from other funding agencies. UTSA undergraduate cyber security programs are collectively ranked #1 in a 2014 survey; the graduate programs are ranked #2 in a 2016 listing. With nearly 31,000 students UTSA is the largest university in South Texas. This position is part of a university-wide cluster hiring initiative, this year in Artificial Intelligence, a part of President Taylor Eighmy’s ambitious vision for UTSA to become an urban-serving, multi-cultural discovery enterprise. UTSA’s research portfolio has increasingly becoming more transdisciplinary, cutting across areas such as cybersecurity, brain health, engineering, biomedicine, public health, educational transformation, sustainability, business and policy. These areas of research have been further fueled by focused faculty cluster hires in areas including cloud computing, cybersecurity, brain health and analytics and data science. This targeted faculty cluster hire in AI will build on and leverage our established research portfolio, propelling our ability to tackle and solve previously unsolvable problems. Hires are expected to build their own unique programs of research, as well as to collaborate with other hires in this cluster and with colleagues in their home department, college, and other colleges.
Furthermore, San Antonio is a recognized cyber-analytics hub. Given the complexity of problems in transdisciplinary fields, and the opportunity for greater government and industry partnerships, UTSA has established The National Security Collaboration Center (NSCC), to support national security and global defense research in cybersecurity and cloud computing, cyber-attack/deterrence, critical infrastructure protection, analytics, high performance computing, AI, machine learning and visualization.
