Our Correlated Electron Materials Group seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to help advance understanding of quantum materials (particularly in quantum magnetism) by focusing on theoretical studies of novel quantum materials with emphasis on aspects that can be probed by neutron scattering investigations. The core scientific aims of the project are to understand how frustration and competing interactions influence quantum magnetism, to identify and understand novel spin textures such as skyrmions and related topological structures and to study the dynamical response of states with topological character. As a postdoc, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with researchers from diverse backgrounds, including condensed matter theorists, materials synthesis and characterization specialists, and scientists performing neutron diffraction and scattering at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). This position resides in the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As part of our team, you will support efforts to understand various collective phenomena in quantum materials. To address the topics outlined above, you will study problems in the field of quantum materials using a variety of theoretical techniques in close collaboration with experimentalists.
Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashion
Maintain an orderly and informative documentation of your research
Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
Maintain a strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics
A PhD in physics, materials science, or a related field completed within the last five years.
Background in numerical techniques, classical field theory, topological solitons and/or correlated electron materials.
Skilled in Monte Carlo/Langevin Dynamics
Experience in working with lattice spin models and effective field theories
Experience in collaboration with experimental efforts
Basic notions of topology and topological solitons
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 12 months. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.
