: We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee with a background in computational physics\. Key functions of this role include, but are not limited to: + Design and implement quantum mechanical line broadening models for x\-ray spectroscopy+ Publish results in peer\-reviewed journals and present at appropriate scientific conferences+ Collaborate with experimental and diagnostic physicists and engineers not only at Sandia, but the broader HED and ICF communities+ Work independently as well as develop and direct multi\-disciplinary scientific research teams Required: + PhD in physics, astrophysics, or astronomy+ Two years of experience in scientific programming with Fortran and Python Desired: + Four years of experience in scientific programming+ Experience studying mechanics of line broadening through quantum mechanical collision calculations and ion microfield effects+ Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated in technical publications and reports, and in technical and project presentations+ The ability to be self\-motivated and to work as part of a diverse team, including project members from other NNSA labs+ Ability to think innovatively and to perform complex analytical analysis and problem solving+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE clearance Department Description: The ICF Target Design Department \(1684\) pursues theoretical and simulation based analyses and assessments of inertial confinement fusion \(ICF\), stockpile stewardship relevant, and other high energy density physics experiments on a variety of platforms, including the Z Facility and the National Ignition Facility \(NIF\)\. The department's core competency lies in the design and analysis of high energy density experiments, with a particular focus on ICF and radiation hydrodynamics experiments\. They rely on complex, integrated, multiphysics simulation tools,with a particular focus on the magnetohydrodynamics of high energy density plasmas, and on spectroscopic diagnosis of high energy density plasmas\. In carrying out their mission, department 1684 collaborates closely with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory \(LLNL\), Los Alamos National Laboratory \(LANL\), and the UK Atomic Weapons Establishment \(AWE\)\.
