Applications are invited from emerging leaders in the area of High Precision Measurements with Exotic Atoms, for a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Calgary. The successful candidate will be nominated for a Tier II Canada Research Chair position. In alignment with the University’s Eyes High strategic vision and in support of its strategic academic and research priorities of interdisciplinarity, leadership, internationalization and creation of a dynamic research environment, the incumbent will join a community that includes world-class scholars in Quantum Optics, SubAtomic Physics, and Isotope Science. Current faculty members in these areas maintain research programs in antimatter physics, quantum information science, laser spectroscopy, and exotic isotope physics.
Tier II Chairs are intended for exceptional emerging scholars (i.e., candidates must have been an active researcher in their field for fewer than 10 years at the time of nomination). Candidates who are more than 10 years from having earned their highest degree and who have had career breaks, such as maternity, parental, or extended sick leave, clinical training, etc., may have their eligibility for a Tier II Chair assessed through the program’s Tier II justification process. The Chair will be based in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Faculty of Science, will have the opportunity to join the Faculty’s Institute for Quantum Science and Technology, and is expected to have interest and potential to join the ALPHA Collaboration, a world-leading, CERN-based collaboration pursuing high precision measurements of the characteristics of antihydrogen as tests of the fundamental symmetries of nature. With the University’s leadership of the ALPHA-g CFI project, we are looking to increase our participation in this major project.
The Chair will be expected to establish a research program that includes activity in high precision measurements with exotic atoms. Applicants must have expertise in exotic atom physics and/or in technical areas associated with the field (e.g. microwave or optical spectroscopy, lasers, interferometry, plasmas, low temperature physics, detector science, positron physics, atom cooling and trapping). Background in the field of exotic atom physics would strengthen an application. Candidates with a research focus in experimental, theoretical, and/or computational physics are eligible for consideration for this position. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a record of leadership in a research or research team setting, an outstanding publication record, and an international reputation as a researcher. The application package must demonstrate the impact of the applicant’s work. The incumbent for this position will be expected to establish a substantial research team of students and, potentially, PDFs working in the area of exotic atom physics or a related field. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will explore collaborative opportunities with members of the university, national, and international scientific communities, including the ALPHA team. Teaching will also be required of the incumbent and so a demonstrated interest in quality instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels will be expected. The successful applicant will hold a PhD in Physics or a related field.
