: We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to support research and development efforts related to thermal protection systems \(TPS\) in hypersonic flight, particularly application of microscale modeling to the multiple physics involved in the ablation of a TPS material\. Opportunities also exist to collaborate in research spanning multiple disciplines, including heat transport, multi\-material mechanical deformation, microscale/mesoscale modeling, and aerosciences\. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: + Research, development, and computational analysis on the coupled fluid\-thermal\-mechanical response of thermal protection systems for hypersonic flight\.+ Development and application of methodologies for simulating the unsteady mechanical and thermal loading of thermal protection systems and response in hypersonic environments+ Contributing to the development of state\-of\-the\-art microscale/mesoscale multi\-physics simulation capabilities\.+ Contributing to the development of future, high fidelity, state\-of\-the\-art analysis capabilities for describing reactive gas\-dynamic heating of flight vehicle surfaces under a broad range of Mach, Reynolds, and Knudsen numbers Required: + PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, or other related engineering or natural science field+ Experience with multi\-physics computational modeling, simulation, and numerical discretization techniques \(finite element method preferred\)+ Experience with microscale/mesoscale materials response to complex environments+ Proficiency with the Linux operating system and experience with a high\-level programming language such as FORTRAN, C, or C\+\++ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance Desired: + Experience with Matlab, Python, scripting languages and grid generation software+ Experience with thermal protection systems+ Experience with modeling composite materials at the microscale/mesoscale+ Experience solving hypersonic flows, particularly, methods for predicting mechanical and thermal loading and response+ Experienced with advanced codes \(CFD, FEA, etc\.\) on massively parallel computing clusters+ Experience with code and solution verification for systems of partial differential equations+ Software development experience, including working with development teams using object\-oriented frameworks would be valuable+ Thorough knowledge of and applied experience with scientific and engineering methods and with discipline's standards for the ethical conduct of research+ Strong verbal and written communication skills and an ability to interact well with fellow technical workers with diverse technical backgrounds Department Description: The Thermal/Fluid Component Sciences Department at Sandia National Laboratories provides a wide range of fluid modeling and analysis, and experimental discovery and validation support in discipline areas such as: incompressible flow, porous flow, reactive flow, multiphase flow, thermal/fluid coupling, suspensions, plasma physics, and rarefied gas dynamics\.
