The USRA Science and Technology Institute, located in Huntsville, AL, is recruiting for up to three full time Scientist positions to participate in our collaborations with the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) science mission, as part of our efforts within the X-ray research group at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center.
The MSFC X-ray research group provides science support for the Chandra X-ray Observatory, as well as scientific and technical expertise for calibration, special studies, and analyses of the observatory. A major aspect of our ongoing research at MSFC is the development of x-ray optics & detectors in support of our suborbital flight program, terrestrial applications, and in preparation for future space missions including, for example, the X-ray Surveyor and Wide Field X-ray Telescope concepts. MSFC was recently awarded a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX) mission called the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) to investigate the polarization of X rays. Other recent development efforts have supported missions including the Advanced Roentgen Telescope – X-ray Concentrator (ART-XC), the Focusing Optics X-ray Solar Imager (FOXSI), and the High-Energy Replicated Optics (HERO) missions. Additional group activities include x-ray optics for various other NASA missions, and x-ray optics for other agencies. MSFC also leads a study team for the next Facility-Class x-ray astronomy mission.
Experience in experimental physics and modeling and data analysis of relevance for astrophysical applications.
Specific expertise sought includes: x-ray optics design, development and testing, assembly, alignment, and calibration.
Additional desired expertise may include ray-trace simulations; thin film coatings; precision metrology; and observational data analysis and Monte-Carlo techniques.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills
PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, or a related field pertinent to x-ray optics and / or x-ray astronomy, with at least 2-5+ years of additional experience
Applicants should apply to the posting at https://usracareers.silkroad.com/ and include a letter of interest, resume, or curriculum vita. Review of candidates will begin immediately. Additional information on USRA can be found at www.usra.edu.
