The Institute of Applied Physics at the University of Bern, Switzerland, has a strong emphasis on basic and applied photon sciences including microwave sensing, bio-photonics and ultrafast optics and spectroscopy.

We seek a person for the joint position of Professor in Applied Physics at University of Bern (40%) and Head of the Laboratory for Nonlinear Optics at PSI (60%).
As a Professor at the University of Bern you will head a research activity in nonlinear ultrafast optics with an emphasis on soft and hard X-rays and promote research collaborations with other Institutes and Departments. We are looking for a person with excellent undergraduate and graduate teaching credentials who will supervise Master and PhD students in their research.
As Head of the Laboratory for Nonlinear Optics (LNO) in the Photon Science Division of PSI, you will be responsible for the maintenance and development of SwissFEL’s laser infrastructure and beam lines and the design and execution of nonlinear optics related experiments at SwissFEL und SLS 2,0. This entails leadership of research, as well as maintenance and operation of facilities crucial for SwissFEL operation in addition to in-house PSI and University of Bern projects at SwissFEL und SLS 2.0. SwissFEL is a new facility which will be commissioning both ultrafast X-ray and XUV lasers over the next four years, and it is planned for SLS to be replaced by an ultralow emittance ring (SLS 2.0) immediately thereafter. The Head of LNO will thus have major input into instrumentation choices.
For this demanding but highly rewarding task we are seeking a person of international standing in nonlinear optics and ultrafast spectroscopy, with a strong interest in extending such techniques through the exploitation of next generation synchrotrons and free electron lasers.
