: We are seeking an R&D Electrical Engineer with extensive technical experience to lead solutions for national security related to electric grid cyber security\. The position exists at the intersection of electric power engineering and industrial control system security\. The successful candidate will drive strategy and develop solutions using current research results as well as drive new research that will be used to provide future solutions\. The candidate will also have a comprehensive understanding of the Open System Interconnection \(OSI\) Model and layer definitions, including details of typical power systems communication protocols such as ICCP, DNP3, IEC 61850, IEEE C37\.118, OSGP, ModBus, IP and Serial Based, IEEE 802, and the ability to quickly assess a host of proprietary protocols\. Current research areas include: + Smart grid technologies+ Power systems communications and operations at the distribution and transmission level+ Modeling and simulation The use of physical and computational simulation and analysis, at the physics level and control system level, are inherent in research activities that will be conducted\. New research is multifaceted engineering that will address interfaces and interactions between all cyber and grid components, subsystems and systems required for a secure grid environment that can withstand coordinated, simultaneous, highly\-sophisticated attacks\. Position requires technical and programmatic leadership in the area of cyber security for industrial controls, with special emphasis on electric power grid systems\. The candidate will have a working knowledge of smart grid technologies, power systems communications and operations at the distribution and transmission levels\. On any given day, you may be called on to: + work closely across the Electric Power Systems Research department and the Cybersecurity R&D department+ develop and oversee coordinated research topics+ conduct research activities utilizing physical and computational simulation, analysis, and evaluation as inherent activities of development+ conduct research in cybersecurity technologies to discover and test innovative methods of securing the cyber and cyber\-physical environment for electric power systems+ research areas that will include technology overlaps between electric power systems and cybersecurity+ encrypt, authenticate, manage identity and access, assess vulnerability, penetration testing, and intrusion detection+ reverse engineer proprietary protocols+ use a multidisciplinary engineering approach to model interfaces, interactions between all cyber and grid components, subsystems and systems required for a secure grid environment that can withstand multipronged, highly sophisticated attacks+ develop customer relations and associated programs in grid\-related cyber security and contribute to the development and execution of Sandia's strategy in this area _Travel one to two times per month is required\._ Required: + PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or in a related Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math \(STEM\) discipline plus five or more years of relevant experience Desired: + PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related technical field plus ten or more years of domain specific technical experience+ National leadership in relevant technology area, as evidenced through accomplishments in peer associations \(such as IEEE\), participation on national\-level committees, patents, and/or peer\-reviewed publications+ Broad energy and infrastructure experience such as renewable energy, distributed energy systems, grid integration, infrastructure interdependencies, or other relevant related technology and modeling and analysis+ Direct experience in successfully managing DOE, DHS, or DOD sponsored programs+ Competence and excellence in developing and maintaining customer relations+ Technical program or project management experience related to electric grid and/or cybersecurity+ Experience building and leading multi\-disciplinary, technical teams+ Experience or training in power grid theory, planning, and operations+ Experience or training in multiple standard power systems communication protocols, such as ICCP, DNP3, IEC 61850,IEEE 37\.118, OSGP, ModBus, and IEEE 802+ Experience or training in encryption, authentication, identity and access management, vulnerability assessment, penetration testing and intrusion detection Department Description: The Electric Power Systems Research Department conducts R&D and advanced analytics to enable the modernization of the nation's electric power grid\. Examples of specific core areas include power system dynamics, operational reliability, advanced renewables integration, electricity market development, smart grid technologies and related information analysis, optimal resource expansion, and computationally based decision support\.
