: The Diagnostic Science and Engineering Department is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to focus on the development and application of laser\-based diagnostics\. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: + Contribute to multiple research projects in the areas of combustion/fire, compressible and multiphase flows, and blast/shock physics, with experiments conducted at lab\-scale and in Sandia's unique large\-scale testing facilities+ Support projects involving the development and maintenance of advanced measurement platforms to support the needs of the US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration programs+ Interact with experimental scientists from throughout Sandia working in a wide range of disciplines+ Work with the mentorship of Sandia staff to develop and field diagnostic tools, and to assist in the publication and presentation of research results to the scientific community+ Conduct independently guided research on at least two projects simultaneously, while teaming with Sandia staff and technologists+ Perform analysis of large experimental data sets using computer programming and automation Required: + Ph\.D\. in engineering, physics, chemistry or a related discipline conferred within 5 years prior to employment+ Experience performing experimental research utilizing laser\-based diagnostics+ Experience with optics and background in laser\-based diagnostic techniques with application to fluid and thermal science problems+ Experience with computer programming skills/experience in Matlab, FORTRAN, or similar language+ Good oral and written communication skills, as evidenced by a demonstrated record of peer\-reviewed journal publications and conference presentations+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE L clearance Desired: + Experience with one or more of the following diagnostic approaches: - coherent anti\-Stokes Raman scattering \(CARS\)- digital holography- ballistic imaging- laser\-induced incandescence \(LII\)- laser\-induced fluorescence \(LIF\)- particle\-image velocimetry+ Experience with ultrafast laser systems+ Ability to independently guide research while working in the context of a larger team Department Description: The Diagnostic Science and Engineering Department \(01512\) develops and applies diagnostics for engineering sciences applications\. We develop the expertise needed to adapt measurement techniques to challenging environments and understand the additional uncertainty which may be introduced\. For model validation, we work in tandem with modelers to design optimum experiments\. We assist data users in interpreting and understanding experimental results\. Finally, we apply our expertise to understand the limitations of any diagnostic and the experimental uncertainty of the resulting data\. The department is engaged in experimental activities in fluid mechanics, multiphase and reactive flows, rheology, shock science, and the thermal, chemical and mechanical characterization of materials, including polymeric and energetic materials\. Our efforts are focused on \(1\) development and application of advanced diagnostics, \(2\) conduct of fundamental experiments to unravel unresolved phenomenology and to characterize material properties and material response, \(3\) design and performance of validation experiments supporting the Center's code development efforts, and \(4\) experimental support for weapon qualification/certification\. The department has responsibility for the operation of thermal/fluids laboratories, pilot\-scale multiphase flow test\-beds, full\-field measurement of material response and material characterization \(DIC\), and rheological characterization facilities\.
