The next generation of high-energy nuclear parity-violation experiments (MOLLER, PVDIS, P2) will require electron polarimetry with unprecedented levels of accuracy. The NSF has just funded a project at the confluence of nuclear, atomic, and optical physics that represents a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of high-accuracy electron polarimetry capability at JLab or MAMI. A postdoctoral research appointment at UNL is available to join a group designing, building, and testing the prototype Accurate Electron Spin Optical Polarimeter (AESOP). The first two years of this project will involve the design, construction, and testing of an optical polarimeter at UNL. An initial scientific goal is the demonstration of ability to measure atomic fluorescence polarization with an accuracy of 0.1%. Ultimately, the polarimeter will be moved to JLab and/or MAMI for further tests and implementation.
The ideal candidate for this position will have had experience with optical polarization measurement and single-photon counting. More generally, someone with good instrumentation experience and an interest in precision measurements is needed.
