: We are seeking a POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTEE On any given day, you may be called on to: We are looking for a postdoctoral research scientist to support grid energy storage research and development focusing on the reliability and performance of energy storage systems appropriate to grid energy storage applications\. Current topics of interest include lithium ion, advanced lead acid, flow battery and more novel storage technologies, analysis of commercial and R&D scale devices\. The postdoctoral candidate will be expected to effectively contribute towards presentation and publication activities supporting the research efforts, and have interpersonal skills that facilitate effective team research efforts with a wide range of scientists\. Candidates must submit a CV, list of presentations and journal publications, and contact information for three references knowledgeable about the candidates academic and research abilities\. The selected candidate will support research activities associated with advancing the understanding around reliability and safety of energy storage systems work funded through the Department of Energy Office of Electricity, as well as through contracts with private industrial partners\. The skills needed to conduct this work include familiarity with moderately hazardous test operations, data acquisition and instrument control, project planning, test management, and familiarity with environmental, health, safety, and security work planning and controls\. Familiarity with energy storage technologies and materials or an aptitude to develop a background in this area is also required\. Expertise in programming, materials characterization, and electrochemistry will be essential skills in performing the required work functions\. Candidates should feel comfortable planning, conducting and executing science and engineering programs within the spectrum of fundamental research, development, or demonstration\. Required: The position requires a recent Ph\.D\. \(< 3 years from award date\) in engineering \(chemical, materials\), physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science or closely related field, with a strong academic record and relevant dissertation project with associated publications exhibiting relevant experience and effective teaming skills\. Candidates should have a strong background in energy storage materials\. \(1\) PhD in Engineering \(Chemical, Materials\), Chemistry, Physics, & Materials Science \(2\) US Citizenship and Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE security clearance \(3\) Familiarity with data acquisition and control of instrumentation for monitoring electrical, thermal, and mechanical variables\. \(4\) Software control of test systems through LabView or object oriented programming language, Python programming, or related control and programming expertise \(5\) Familiarity with battery materials and energy storage systems and theoretical and practical understanding of electrochemistry as it relates to batteries Desired: \(1\) Experience coordinating the efforts of a group of technicians and/or students \(2\) Experience with energy storage technologies, especially batteries and/or capacitors \(3\) Prior experience with battery safety and/or reliability testing and familiarity with associated research challenges, testing protocol, standards, and safe work practices \(4\) Background in analytical techniques and materials characterization \(5\) Ability to work in a team environment and support efforts to meet testing schedules \(6\) Excellent communication skills including reporting of technical results in both written and presentation form as demonstrated through an established publication record, presentations, and/or internally produced reports \( \(7\) Training and commitment to laboratory safety and experience in dealing with electrical, mechanical, thermal, and chemical hazards \(8\) Laboratory focus and willingness to spend the majority of the workday in a laboratory environment \(9\) An understanding of the principles of electrochemical processes \(10\) Aptitude for designing engineered fixtures, cabling, and other testing hardware \(11\) Exemplary laboratory and/or test facility safety record and a commitment to the adherence of operational safety principles \(12\) Experience in the application of engineered safety controls in mitigating or eliminating safety hazards \(13\) Knowledge of electrochemically active metal\-oxide materials \(14\) Knowledge of lithium\-ion battery materials and systems Department Description: The Energy Systems Analysis Department provides a capability within Sandia to assess future energy options, modernize the US energy infrastructure, and to help identify the critical research and development needs to ensure the future reliability, sustainability, and security of our customer's energy systems and the nation's energy infrastructure\.
